Is Gignac France’s best player?

By: Dave Trotter | October 14th, 2009

gignacIn the last few months, the name Andre-Pierre Gignac has started to make the rounds in international football discussions. The Toulouse striker, who up till now had been a relative unknown, seems to have found a regular spot on France’s starting eleven.

Still, with three goals against the Faroe Islands (and yes, I understand they are only the Faroe Islands), has Gignac shown that he is the best player for the French National Team?

In the last three years, Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema have been battling for the “who is the best footballer in France” title. And both have made impressive cases. Ribery had an amazing 2006 World Cup which introduced the midfielder to the world, while Benzema did a great job at Lyon while being less than impressive for the men’s national team.

But why is Gignac better?

There are a number of reason. First and foremost, I would have to say his commitment his teams (Toulouse and France) has been unquestionably strong. In recent weeks we have seen rifts between coach and team which has brought a lot of drama. We also have players like Benzema and Malouda showing that they are less than enthusiastic about playing for France.

On the other hand, Gignac has shown the work ethic on the field that we should expect from a French player at the highest level of play. Unlike most of the players for Les Blues now, Gignac shows his hustle in every game. In Saturday’s game against the Faroe Islands, not only did Gignac score two goals, he created a number of opportunities as well.

Along with his commitment to the game, Gignac has also shown that he is amongst the best ball handlers as well. Last year with Toulouse, as well as this year with the French national team, Gignac’s goals came from really tight spots which would be impossible for the average player to get out of. His 6′1, 191 pound physique gives him the upper advantage when battling for the ball. Whereas many of the French players have to rely on speed to create their own play, Gignac can do it with a combination of both speed and grit.

Another plus that the French striker has is his ability to work anywhere on the pitch. When Gignac started playing with Lorient a few years ago, he was a right-foot only scorer. And while he still could score, his play was a little more predictable. Last year, he started working on his left-foot. Since then, they goals have been flying for Gignac. While most of his goals still come from the right foot, he uses the left foot much more, giving him the unpredictability a player needs at this level of play. He now seems to be just as natural on the left side of the pitch (in fact for Toulouse even more so on the left) as he does in the center or right side.

And finally, he brings no drama. On a team where players always seem to be saying something stupid to the press, Gignac pretty much keeps to himself. Like Jeremy Toulalan, he doesn’t like to rock the boat and doesn’t like to cause trouble. Maybe that is why Gignac is finding himself on the French squad with regularity, because he goes out there…plays the game…does his best…then goes home.

So, could people say that Ribery and Benzema are the best French players? I guess. But Gignac not only possesses the skill, speed and strength that a player needs to be successful at this level, but he also has the heart, committment and passion to continue his strong play.

Therefore, the answer is yes, Andre-Pierre Gignac is the best player in France.

some how i knew there was something special about him when he started scoring those goals. his also a player who plays well when they are good players on the field. which is kinder wield for his age cuase most players stumble when playing with other top players and when fighting for a spot on the team

he reminds of drogba, he has the physical, hustle and scoring instinct like him

Best, not sure, but he has secured himself a place in the team. What is very surprising with him is that he rarely scores headers, as you pointed out, most of his goals are due to technique and moving into the optimal spots to score. If he adds the aerial aspect to his game, even Benzema will have to stay on the bench. Arsenal really missed the boat with him, many thought he was a 1 season wonder, he looks like he has another level to go and when he does, oh boy!!!

With the season he’s having? Better than Gourcuff, Toulalan, Benzema, Evra? Nope.

Well, when you are the only offensive firepower on the team, it will be easier to shut down Gignac.

But what are everyone else’s qualifers as far as putting Benzema, Ribery and Evra ahead of Gignac. Seems like people say “oh, these people are great” just because they signed big contracts with big clubs.

There was a high likelihood that Gignac was going to go to Lyon, but Gignac decided to honor his contract and stay in Toulouse.

Again, qualities do those players have that Gignac doesn’t?

Take yesterday’s game for example, Benzema (who played great) could only produce a good play if he had Henry or Malouda (who had a great game also) helping him. Gignac, on the other hand, produced plays by himself. He has a great knack for stealing the ball from defenders (which was another point I failed to mention) and create a play himself. The other players (with the exception of Henry and Ribery) really need to depend on team play to succeed. They can’t ‘go it alone’ like Gignac.

Surely, if I was in a 1-4 situation going toward the net, I would want Gignac with the ball.

Also, it is a lot easier to score goals when you have a supporting cast like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Henry and Benzema have only played with high-profile clubs in their careers. Ribery, on the other hand, did work his way up the system, playing for teams like Metz. So, the question is…could those other players score 24 goals in a Ligue 1 season “at Toulouse”? Maybe, who knows.

Finally, Benzema – 28 games, 8 goals. Gignac – 8 games, 4 goals for the nationa team. And before I hear “three of Gignac’s goals where against the Faroe Islands,” well, three of Benzema’s goals were against the Faroes as well.

Bayern isn’t the greatest supporting cast actually. I would have to put Ribery ahead of Gignac if only because APG has not fully proved himself yet.

But Bayern is ahead of Toulouse, that is for sure.

Without a shadow of doubt, I consider Ribery to be the best French player at the moment. Malouda is also proving to be indispensable for the French team on current form. But Gignac is probably the most exciting thing to have happened to French football since Ribery arrived on the scene, and if he doesn’t get injured then he has a very bright future. Gourcuyff is a close second. Benzema is a great player but I don’t think he is as strong mentally as Gignac (he is a player who only can play with ‘winners’). He might prove me wrong.
