Goaltenders had a rough season at Toulouse. Yohann Pele went down to start the season. His replacement, Olivier Blondel was in injured just a few games later. This left the goaltending duties on the shoulders of Mathieu Valverde (who was allowed to join Toulouse after the transfer window had closed due to the dire situation at Le Tef). In addition, 18-year old Marc Vidal and 17-year old Anthony Loustallot had to work the goaltending duties until, and after Valverde arrived.
But yesterday, Toulouse’s goaltending was dealt a bit of a blow yesterday when Olivier Blondel (who is underrated as a goalkeeper in my opinion), was send to Troyes on a free transfer. Blondel, who did play stellar in the few games he played for Toulouse, will help the newly promoted side move up the ladder in Ligue 2.
Blondel with be battling with French-born American Quentin Westberg for the top goaltending spot, which Blondel should easily get.

One of the reasons that Toulouse had a poor season this year (in addition to Gignac being ineffective and injured and us dropping goalkeepers like flies) was the ineffective play of Toulouse right back Albin Ebondo.
This year Ebondo caused a number of problems for Toulouse, from making horrible defensive mistakes (like being totally out of position) to offensive mistakes (intercepted pass after intercepted pass). And in a league where attacking play on the left side is more important than on the right, Albin Ebondo is the reason that Toulouse finished near the bottom of the table

Going into this weekend’s matchup against Paris St-Germain, where Toulouse are looking to cash in on a crutial three points on the road, the team has had to deal with some good, and bad, news.
First the bad news.

Well, since today is Super Bowl Day (and on the last Ligue 1 Talk Podcast I predicted a Colts victory 35-17, but I am going for the Saints), I will not be able to join any live discussions for this match. Therefore, I wanted to bring the late breaking news before the start of today’s match.
First of all, Colin Kazim-Richards has been praised by Alain Casanova, according to the official Ligue 1 site. As we have mentioned in the past week, his play has been quite good (which I didn’t expect). “I think Kazim was one of the few satisfactions in the first half against Marseille in midweek,” said Casanova.

Getting ready for the big matchup between Toulouse and Lyon, OL manager Claude Puel knows that his team has to be prepared to play against a Toulouse side that will be looking to avenge their mid-week exit from the League Cup to Marseille.
“They are a team with quality and we know it,” he said, according to www.olweb.fr.

After a heartbreaking loss to Marseille earlier this week in the semifinals of the League Cup, Toulouse looks to concentrate more on their Ligue 1 season as they will host Lyon at the Stadium Municipal Sunday evening.
While they were the losing side in the Cup match, Toulouse had the better play throughout the 90 minutes. So, even though they have been knocked out, they have a lot to look forward to. And this past lost to Marseille is Le Tef’s first loss of 2010.

I know I started this late, but I was at work, but I have starting this live blog at the second half of the match between Toulouse and Marseille. So far, it is a 0-0 game.
Toulouse look to make it to their first ever League Cup final today as they host the mighty Olympique Marseille at the Stadium Municipal tomorrow. Le Tef has had an up and down season, plagued with injuries as well. But after finishing off the year on a horrible note, which included a loss to last place Grenoble, 2010 has been a different story for the men in purple.

While Toulouse’s season has been filled with mixed results so far, their run in the cup matches (excluding Europa Cup, that is) has been impressive. In the League Cup, Le Tef has made it to the quarter-finals and will be playing the easiest competition, last year’s cup winners Guingamp.
Last year, Guingamp surprised the French football world by defeating Rennes in the French Cup final to become the first non-top tier league team to win that cup since 1959. On their way to their historic victory, Guingamp knocked Toulouse off in the quarter-finals.
There is no doubt that Toulouse will be looking for revenge against the Ligue 2 side that seems to always bring their best game to cup competitions. Toulouse midfielder Mathieu Berson said that the loss to Guingamp last year was a “big black spot” on what was otherwise a positive season.

Toulouse chairman Olivier Sadran said today that there haven’t been any ‘good’ offers for Andre-Pierre Gignac during the current winter transfer window. According to French media, a number of clubs, including Arsenal, have approached Toulouse in regards to signing the French international striker.
Gignac has signed a contract extension with Toulouse until 2013. But if the team gets an offer they can’t refuse, Sadran somewhat indicated that he would listen. “If we receive an offer and all parties are in agreement, we will advise,” said Sadran according to L’Equipe. In addition, Sadran feels that the current economic situation (in football worldwide I assume) continues to be poor, that the summer transfer window will be quiet.
